Ebony, one of Santa's elves,
was extremely unhappy. "I feel so unfulfilled," he said to himself,
as a tear rolled down his cheek. "I hate my job."
Santa's elves were industrious
workers with the exception of Ebony, who was not a hard worker at all. He
just stared at the clock every day and seldom spoke to anyone.
"Ebony is not doing his
share," the other elves complained to Santa. "We cover for
him, but it's not fair. Our North Pole, Elves Workshop union
agreement states that we all do our part."
"Right," agreed
Santa. "There should be equity for all and always has been. Leave
the problem with me. I will work something out."
"What can I do?"
wondered Santa, gazing at his boots. "My goodness, they are so muddy! They need cleaning and polishing. That gives me an idea."
"Ebony, I'm promoting you.
You have a special assignment now," said Santa. He knew
that Ebony was the only elf not carrying his share of the workload.
"Mrs. Clause needs some help. You're just the person to assist
her so from now on, so you'll be her helper. How do you feel about
that?"
"Oh, thank you, Santa. That
is wonderful!" said Ebony. He knew that he hadn't been
working hard enough and hung his head in shame. Looking down, he
saw Santa's muddy boots. "Mrs. Clause cleans and polishes your boots
too, right?"
Santa nodded.
"That'll be part of
my job too and I'll help her make cookies."
"I got a promotion!"
Ebony hollered excitedly, running towards Santa's house. From that day forward, Ebony
took his work seriously.
Not long after, one of the elves came to Santa.
"What a difference!"
he exclaimed. "Ebony is covered with boot black when he brings
us cookies. He's a totally different guy now. He is so happy! What
did you do?"
He couldn't help but
notice Santa's boots were as shiny as the stars. "They
look just like a mirror!"
"Every elf has a
special place at the North Pole," said Santa, with a twinkle in his
eye. "Ebony has found his."
