Moonlight in Miami: The Moon Rose Higher

“The moonlight in Miami is so beautiful!”

The full, reddish-orange moon loomed large on the distant horizon as Phil, a post-graduate student, stood on the deserted beach gazing at the reflections of the moon and stars twinkling in among the gentle waves.

“If only I had the wisdom of our Creator,” he thought. “Where did he get the knowledge to create something so beautiful? There are miles of ocean and sand as far as I can see. The oceanfront is never ending. I love it!”

Then, in a moment of quiet contemplation, he began wondering if he'd set his academic goals and expectations too high. Inwardly, his heart was aching.

“I don’t even want to think about my life. I’m like a single grain of sand tossed on the beach by the waves.”

Suddenly, he felt utterly alone.

“I have no one.”

Phil had traveled south for a spring vacation, trying to find peace of mind. He was wrestling with many things including his recent marriage break-up and academic career. He knew he'd gotten married too soon, probably to the wrong girl, too. At first, his parents had been upset, but they had agreed to accept his decision. They wanted him to become a university professor like his father. He was already well on his way towards achieving that goal.

Phil loved Jana dearly and his parents were starting to love her like a daughter. Jana seemed to love him too, but she could not comprehend why he needed to complete his education; neither did her elderly parents. Phil was not ready to become a father and his wife insisted on having children immediately.

“Why are you only interested in books?” Jana had asked him, repeatedly. “You have absolutely no time for us! What about our marriage, children and our families?”

As he moon rose higher, a gentle, humid breeze began to blow across Phil’s face. A tear rolled down his cheek.

“The problems of today are enough for one day,” he decided. “Tonight, I will only think about beauty and truth! What must I do to be true to myself?”
