Entanglement: The First Dance

“It all happened so suddenly,” Rita said, with a nervous smile, as she gazed into her new husband’s eyes. Rita and Bert had just cut their wedding cake. Rita was recounting how they had first met to their wedding guests.

“Bert and I were thirteen years old when we met. We hit it off immediately and soon became best friends. We were like two mischievous kittens playing with balls of brightly colored wool. There was entanglement right from the beginning and so much color in our lives. I love thinking about those years!”

“We did get into mischief,” confessed Bert. “Now folks, let’s toast my new bride!”

“Entanglement,” replied Rita, “At its very best!”

Everyone laughed, knowing this was going to be a good marriage.

“I love my wedding rings,” she whispered. “Thank you, so much!”

“You are so beautiful!” he replied. “I love you.”

Rita tossed her bouquet, just as the orchestra started to play.

“Be ready for a surprise,” Bert said, with a mischievous glint in his eye.

The guests began mingling, unaware of what was about to happen.

Suddenly, a tall, dark man, wearing a skidoo suit, boots and a ski mask, appeared at the back doorway. He walked in and grabbed the new bride by the arm.

“Be quiet!” he said to Rita, in a gruff voice. “You’re coming with me!”

"Stay where you are!” he ordered Bert. “Don’t move if you ever want to see your wife again.”

The man quickly led Rita out the back way and sped off with her on his skidoo.

Bert didn't budge. The distant roar left a sick feeling in his stomach.

“Have I done the right thing?” he wondered.

Later that evening in the bridal suite, the newlyweds rollicked in laughter.

“I told you I wasn’t going to dance in front of everyone. I had to find some way to get us out of there. We can dance here,” Bert said, popping the cork on a bottle of champagne.
