“Sabotage, it will be!” said
Tiffany to Nikki at their grade five, Valentine’s Day school
party. She was determined to sabotage her father’s new girl friend,
Mercury Bond. Tiffany wanted her new teacher Miss Jones, to become his best
friend. "Ask your Mom and Dad if you can come to supper with us, tonight
and then we can work on our sabotage plan together.”
Nikki spotted Mercury
Bond.
“She’s coming,” Nikki
whispered. “I really don’t like her.”
“She’s weird,” replied
Tiffany. “Look at those five inch heels!”
“Girls, I’m
getting some Valentine’s Day cake,” said Mercury.
“That smile is
sickening,” thought Nikki.
“Thank you,” replied
Tiffany politely, choking on her words. “We have something to do.”
“We do?” asked
Nikki, moments later. “What?”
“Find Miss Jones,” said
Tiffany. “Sabotage plan part one, invite another woman for purposes of
comparison.”
“What is sabotage plan part
two?”
“Observe how they act in front
of my Dad,” replied Tiffany. “Should we keep notes?”
“I’ll do that,” offered Nikki.
A born writer, she had already started to make mental notes. “Sabotage plan
part three.”
“Be on our best behavior,”
suggested Tiffany. "To impress Miss Jones.”
“Sabotage plan part four.” said
Nikki.
“My Dad will love her,”
said Tiffany, looking for her teacher. “I want Miss Jones to be my mom,
not that hard rock lady.”
Moments later,
Tiffany introduced Miss Jones to her father. Mercury had not returned
yet.
“Miss Jones, would
you join us for Valentine’s Day cake?” Tiffany asked.
Nikki laughed. Mercury
would have to go back for more cake and stand in line again. That line was
getting longer and longer, too.
“Sabotage plan part
five, six and seven,” Nikki wrote in her notebook. “Offer Miss Jones cake,
keep
Mercury busy while Miss Jones gets to know Tiffany’s Dad and then, invite
Miss Jones to dinner tonight.”
"She'll never know she's
being sabotaged," whispered Tiffany.
